R. WAYNE BAUGHMAN
Outstanding American from the State of Colorado
Baughman, who has been the head coach at the Air Force Academy for 26 years, will retire at the end of this season. Going into this year he had compiled a 181-126-5 record with the Falcons. Baughman, who obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma and master's degrees from both the University of Denver and the University of Colorado, first served as head coach from 1975-1984 while he was on active duty in the Air Force. He took over the program as a civilian in 1988 and overall, has had 17 winning seasons, including the Western Athletic Conference title in 1991 with a 10-1 dual match record. He was a coach for the 1976 and 1980 Olympic teams, headed five World Championship teams and one Pan American team. Already a member of the USA Wrestling and Helms-United Savings Halls of Fame, he was selected National Freestyle Coach of the Year in 1976. He has coached 13 of the Academy's 16 WAC champions. He has served as the Chief of Air Force Sports Programs for five years and also served as an assistant general manager for the 1986 World Cycling Championships. An avid mountain climber, he has climbed all 54 mountains over 14,000-feet in Colorado.
