MARILYN SMITH
Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award
USA Wrestling named Marilyn Smith the Coach's Wife of the Year in 1985. Now, she has supported wrestling as a
coach's wife, mother and friend to the sport for the past 42 years. She raised
two sons (both state place winners) and a daughter, but considers all the
wrestlers she has worked with as, "her sons." She has been a director
of numerous tournaments and has done the pairings for tournaments in
Northeastern Colorado as well as when she was with her husband when he was
coaching college wrestling at Fort Hays State in Kansas. She has held
roundtable discussions for wives at Athletic Director's Conventions, has
instructed at clinics, teaching how to direct tournaments, organized suppers
and fund raisers and has helped organize youth wrestling clubs in the state.
She figures she has seen nearly 450 dual meets, 168 tournaments and well over
15,600 individual matches. She served
as a secretary, treasurer and president of the Wray Women's Golf Association
and president of the Fort Hays Golf Association. She currently resides in
Milliken.
