Hank Brown’s life exemplifies the definition of "Outstanding American." His accomplishments in the fields of academia, business, politics and civic activities have produced a standard that few can match. Brown became the 11th President of the University of Northern Colorado in July 1998 and has proven to be an invaluable asset to the school. Under his direction, UNC has grown in enrollment and progressed in all academic and fiscal areas. Before becoming UNC’s President, Brown served Colorado in the United States Senate from 1990 to 1997. Before the Senate, Brown served five consecutive terms in Congress from 1980 to 1990, representing Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. During his tenure in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Brown was involved in creating and passing extensive domestic and international legislation. Before his service in the U.S. Congress, Brown was Vice President of Monfort of Colorado. He also served in the Colorado Senate from 1972-76.

In high school, Brown was an All-State wrestler in California and lettered twice in wrestling at the University of Colorado. Hank Brown’s father wrestled at Iowa State and placed second in the national tournament and his son, Harry was a Colorado State champion. Hank has been a consistent supporter and generous benefactor to the sport of wrestling.

At the University of Colorado Brown earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1961 and served as CU’s Student Body President. He earned a Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Colorado Law School in 1969. While in Washington, Brown earned a Master of Law Degree in 1986 from George Washington University. In 1988, he passed the exam to become a certified public accountant.

From 1962-66 Brown served in the U.S. Navy and was decorated for service in Viet Nam. The Colorado native was born February 12, 1940 in Denver. He and his wife, Nan, have lived in Greeley since 1969.

Hank Brown has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his business, political and civic accomplishments. The awards range from local to international in scope and denote his commitment to excellence in all phases of his life.
